I take the fight against diabetes personally. My grandfather was the first person in my family I knew that had diabetes. I watched him over the years as he tried to manage his diabetes without complaint.  His passing was the motivator for me to become a diabetes educator.

I also started to recognize that members of my extended family were being diagnosed with diabetes; aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends as well.

My mother was recently admitted into the hospital for possible hypoglycemia due to hyperinsulinemia. After relaying her family history of diabetes and high blood pressure to the medical team, well beyond what most hospital patients convey, she should have been flagged as being in the risk group for diabetes given her age and ethnicity.

She wast not, and that did not stop the hospital from serving her the most diabetes unfriendly meal ever; french toast, syrup, jelly, yogurt and an apple.

African Americans and Hispanics are experiencing an epidemic. The healthcare industry has to do better. I have to do better.

I created HICO Health to equip people living with type 2 diabetes with the tools and information to live a healthier life.
